LVAD Pump Thrombosis
A 70 y/o male post LVAD implantation presents to the emergency department with a chief complaint of shortness of the breath. The team will need to progress through the initial assessment of an LVAD patient, ultimately leading to a diagnosis of pump thrombosis. They will initiate anticoagulation, consult cardiothoracic surgery, and admit to CTICU.

We are returning to a case series that we published two years ago! This is the ninth case in a series we are publishing that make up “The Nightmares Course” - a Sim Bootcamp for new residents. It’s 5:00 am and you’ve been called to see a patient complaining of “chest discomfort”.
Nightmares Case 1: Bradycardia
This is a case of an elderly patient with syncope. He is found to be in third degree heart block. The team is expected to perform an initial assessment and obtain an ECG. Upon recognizing the heart block, they should ensure IV access and place pacer pads while calling for help.
